The challenge

Greenfield Academy, a mid-sized secondary school, faced a recurring challenge: Year 9 students were making GCSE subject choices with limited insight into their own strengths, interests, and aptitudes. Decisions were often driven by peer pressure, parental expectations, or surface-level preferences rather than a genuine understanding of each student's profile.

The school's counselling team lacked the structured tools to provide personalised, evidence-based guidance at scale. With 120 students to support in a short options window, they needed a systematic approach.

Our approach

Ripples NextGen conducted a comprehensive psychometric assessment programme across the entire Year 9 cohort. Each student completed assessments covering cognitive abilities, personality traits, learning styles, and career interests.

The assessment data was analysed and compiled into individual Student Development Reports — each one clear, jargon-free, and tailored to the student. Reports were shared with students, parents, and form tutors, and accompanied by a group feedback session and individual follow-up consultations for students with complex profiles.

We also provided the school's counselling team with a cohort-level summary report, highlighting patterns and trends that could inform broader academic planning and pastoral support strategies.

The outcome

Students reported feeling significantly more confident in their subject choices, with 87% saying the assessment helped them understand themselves better. Parents provided overwhelmingly positive feedback, noting that the reports gave them a shared language to discuss their child's future constructively.

The school's counselling team reported that the structured data reduced guesswork and enabled more productive one-to-one conversations. Greenfield Academy has since adopted Ripples NextGen assessments as a standard part of their Year 9 transition programme.

Ripples NextGen gave us the clarity we needed. For the first time, every student had a personalised, evidence-based guide to help them make one of their most important decisions. The impact on student confidence and parent engagement was immediate.
